fabriholics anonymous

Ok, I promise that this isn't another new year's resolution post- for REALZ. I noticed a while back that I was spending too much money on craft supplies- namely fabric. I decided that once 2014 rolled around, I was going to go on a craft supply fast! Turns out I'm not the only one. :)

The Eleven Garden started a six month challenge called Fabriholics Anonymous; here are the rules (copied from her blog):

FABRIC FAST RULES:
1) No fabric purchases for 6 months beginning January 1, 2014.
2) At 6 months reevaluate status and decide whether to keep going for full year.
3) Create a UFO list and complete them!
4) Exceptions
  • Backing: purchasing a backing to finish a quilt top is permissible. However, attempting to use fabric in your possession for a backing is preferable.
  • Books and Magazine purchases are allowed as they are not fabric. Notions acceptable too.
  • Swap Mama Fabric: if hosting a swap you are permitted to by fabric to execute swap duties, but you may not join a swap simply for the sake of being able to buy fabric!
  • Quilts for Publication: if you are making a quilt for a publication and need certain fabric to execute it correctly then that is a major exception - who can blame you?

Sounds doable, huh? I'm totally in! I am SO AWARE that I haven't been using my money wisely and I have way more fabric than I need (even if it is a lot less than others have). I need to be more responsible with what I've been given and I'm starting with a fabric fast! Here are my goals for the next six months:
  1. Buy no fabric!!! The only fabric I am allowing myself to buy is half a yard of solid fabric to finish a quilt top I'm currently working on and flat sheets when I want a plain quilt back.
  2. Finish my modern improvisational solids quilt top (the half yard mentioned above is for this project).

  3. Make a Modern Maples quilt top (I have two blocks completed).
  4. Use the fun pattern books I have to make two additional quilt tops by June 1, 2014. This will be a total of four made by me quilts by June! :)
  5. Give Jill all quilt tops to quilt by June 1, including the vintage Dresden plate top that I bought from eBay last year.
  6. Use my ridiculous scrap stash to make some fun pillows, using the pattern books that I have.
If I achieve all of the above goals, I'm going to give myself a prize! Why not, right? Crimson Tate has some really great luggage made specifically to travel with sewing machines- my favorite is the Tutto Sewing Machine on Wheels (large 22") in turquoise.

This would be so great for taking to retreats!!! :)

What about you- wanna join me on a six month fabric stash?

  1. Good luck, Kara, I know you can do it. Can't join you, though, I already have a goal of upgrading my fabrics a little this year. I'll settle for less in my fabric stash than I had at the beginning of the year, a goal I kept last year (except when an older friend gifted me with fabric when she moved to a smaller apartment.)

  2. I am with you Kara! My fabric all sits in the corner of my living room and I don't need more. I have a huge list of projects that correlates to a third of the fabric. It will take me beyond six months to get through that.
