Ok, I promise that this isn't another new year's resolution post- for REALZ. I noticed a while back that I was spending too much money on craft supplies- namely fabric. I decided that once 2014 rolled around, I was going to go on a craft supply fast! Turns out I'm not the only one. :)
The Eleven Garden started a six month challenge called Fabriholics Anonymous; here are the rules (copied from her blog):
FABRIC FAST
RULES:
1) No fabric purchases for
6 months beginning January 1, 2014.
2) At 6 months reevaluate
status and decide whether to keep going for full year.
3) Create a UFO list and
complete them!
4) Exceptions
- Backing: purchasing a backing to finish a quilt top is permissible. However, attempting to use fabric in your possession for a backing is preferable.
- Books and Magazine purchases are allowed as they are not fabric. Notions acceptable too.
- Swap Mama Fabric: if hosting a swap you are permitted to by fabric to execute swap duties, but you may not join a swap simply for the sake of being able to buy fabric!
- Quilts for Publication: if you are making a quilt for a publication and need certain fabric to execute it correctly then that is a major exception - who can blame you?
Sounds doable, huh? I'm totally in! I am SO AWARE that I haven't been using my money wisely and I have way more fabric than I need (even if it is a lot less than others have). I need to be more responsible with what I've been given and I'm starting with a fabric fast! Here are my goals for the next six months:
- Buy no fabric!!! The only fabric I am allowing myself to buy is half a yard of solid fabric to finish a quilt top I'm currently working on and flat sheets when I want a plain quilt back.
- Finish my modern improvisational solids quilt top (the half yard mentioned above is for this project).
- Make a Modern Maples quilt top (I have two blocks completed).
- Use the fun pattern books I have to make two additional quilt tops by June 1, 2014. This will be a total of four made by me quilts by June! :)
- Give Jill all quilt tops to quilt by June 1, including the vintage Dresden plate top that I bought from eBay last year.
- Use my ridiculous scrap stash to make some fun pillows, using the pattern books that I have.
This would be so great for taking to retreats!!! :)
What about you- wanna join me on a six month fabric stash?
Good luck, Kara, I know you can do it. Can't join you, though, I already have a goal of upgrading my fabrics a little this year. I'll settle for less in my fabric stash than I had at the beginning of the year, a goal I kept last year (except when an older friend gifted me with fabric when she moved to a smaller apartment.)
ReplyDeleteI am with you Kara! My fabric all sits in the corner of my living room and I don't need more. I have a huge list of projects that correlates to a third of the fabric. It will take me beyond six months to get through that.
ReplyDeleteI already started In Dec and won't my goal is not to purchase til my birthday May 1st. You can do it!
