giveaway for sandy hook

The scenes from last week's tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in Conneticut have shaken me to my core.

I don't understand why or how this happened and my heart BREAKS for those who have lost someone they loved. I know that I have never in my life faced a pain like theirs and I pray for comfort for them... what else can you pray for, really? As someone who has experienced the heartbreak/fear/despair/fill in the blank as a result of dear family members who suffer from mental illness, this hits particularly close to home for me.

There's a quote from sweet Mister Rogers that has gone viral since the tragedy took place last Friday:
source
“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ To this day, especially in times of ‘disaster,’ I remember my mother’s words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers - so many caring people in this world.” — Mister Rogers
As someone who grew up watching Mister Rogers, this simple quote has given me much comfort in the past few days. Wee Little Stitches has taken a line from that quote and designed a new cross stitch pattern of it:

This lovely pattern can be purchased for $5.00 at Kitschy Digitals and 100% of the sales goes to the Sandy Hook School Support Fund and NAMI (The National Alliance on Mental Illness). Not only that but all of proceeds for every single Wee Little Stitches pattern bought on Kitschy between now and Friday will also go to these two organizations. How unbelievably generous is that?

I've bought one of these patterns for myself to make for a loved one and have bought another one to giveaway to one of you, so that you can share this simple- yet moving- bit of hope with someone you love. To enter, simply leave a comment on this post between now and noon EST Friday, December 21. I'll announce the recepient that afternoon.

Thanks so much for reading; I'm grateful for each one of you. Let's do our best to love and comfort every single person we meet and to help those who need it.

xo, Kara

  1. I do not know how anyone could watch what happened and not be affected! Just watching the video above, I teared up. Not having children, I have no idea what those parents are going through. I hope that a peace and calm finds them, and helps them get through this terrible incident. The people at Wee Little Stitches are amazing for running such a great promotion, and very selfless to give all the proceeds, it is nice to find that they are helpers and that kindness is still alive today!

  2. Oh Kara. You have the sweetest heart. Truly this quote was something like a balm to remeber that there's good out there still, even when the evil tries to drown it out.

  3. I love that quote and I so adore Mr. Rogers. Did you ever read "I'm Proud of You" by Tim Madigan? Add it to your list, it is wonderful. I love this pattern too and am wishing I was a cross stitcher. Thanks for letting your light shine out in this dark world.

  4. Still so dumbfounded, but so grateful both friends' children were not hurt. One was on the other side of the school but the other was found pretending to be dead under two of the children who were shot. My friend is back at home now from the hospital but is still pretty numb over how close she was to losing her son.

  5. Oh Kara it is SUCH a horrendous thing. There really are no words. I've been squeezing my babies tight every time I think about it.

I had never heard of Mr Rogers, obviously a program that never made it to Australian shores, but I followed your link and read about it.

How gorgeous of Wee Little Stitches to make that pattern! Such a lovely idea and way to be creative and help at the same time. xx
